Community Access Program

The senior students participate in a Community Access Program (CAPs).  This program focuses on building and developing key life skills that students are taught onsite and then put into practice on various CAPs outings. Such skills include using public transport (where to sit, appropriate greetings, reading a timetable, hailing a bus and how to carry their bag), using a SmartRider, reading general signs, road safety, interacting with people of the public appropriately and many more. We incorporate Literacy, Numeracy and Protective Behaviours into the program with activities like reading maps, using and counting money, telling time, where to go in an emergency, greetings, social interactions, private and public places, safe and unsafe conversation and reading timetables. We use Transperth Buses and Trains to get to and from our destinations. The opportunities provide students with multiple opportunities across the year to practice and develop their confidence and skills across these areas, with the end goal to become a functioning and independent member of the community.
